TEAM TOURNAMENT CREATION

How to set up a team tournament on Aspire — from choosing the format to naming events, configuring draws, rubbers, roster limits, and fees.

Individual vs Team

Pick the right tournament format first

Individual

Players or pairs enter events like Men's Singles Open. One match = one contest.

Team

Clubs enter as a unit. One Tie (e.g. Lions vs Tigers) contains several rubbers (MS, WS, MD…). Majority of rubbers wins the Tie.

Format is chosen when you create the tournament and should not be mixed — a team tournament only contains team events.

Each discipline contest inside the Tie

Two independent decisions on every team event: draw type (how teams meet) and rubbers(what's inside each Tie). Changing one never changes the other. After creating an event, open Rubbers on the event card to set the composition (adult MS–XD or junior BS/GS/BD/GD). Presets like Thomas Cup or Junior Boys only pre-fill the form — every saved rubber is a real row.

Create flow

What to enter at each step

  1. 1

    Create the tournament

Name, dates, venue, and set format to Team. Publish later when events and rubbers are ready.

  2. 2

Add one or more team events

Each event is its own competition — e.g. Men’s Team and Women’s Team under the same weekend tournament.

  3. 3

    Configure the event

Event name, team gender, grade, draw type, entry fee per team, min/max roster, optional max teams, and max rubbers per player.

  4. 4

    Define rubbers (composition)

Ordered list of disciplines for every Tie — e.g. MS, MS, MD, MS, MD. Same template for the whole event.

  5. 5

    Open registration → generate draw

Teams register with rosters. After entries close, generate the draw to create Ties; each expands into the event’s rubbers.

Event fields explained

What each setting controls

Event name

Shown on public pages and registration. Use samples above as a pattern.

Team gender

Male, Female, or Mixed — drives who may join the roster.

Grade

Open, U-grades, Masters, or Other. Age rules follow BWF-style cutoffs where applicable.

Draw type

Knockout, Round Robin, or Groups + Playoff. Configures how teams meet — not the rubbers inside a Tie.

Entry fee per team

Flat fee charged per team entry (not per roster player).

Min / max roster

Fewest and most players allowed on a team’s squad for this event.

Max teams (optional)

Cap how many teams can enter. Leave unset for no limit.

Max rubbers per player

1 = no reuse across rubbers in the same Tie. 2+ = limited reuse. Unset = no limit.

Rubbers

Composition template — e.g. Thomas Cup style 3 singles + 2 doubles, or Sudirman-style MS/WS/MD/WD/XD.

Draw types for teams

Same three formats as individual — unit is the team

Knockout

Lose once and your team is out.

Teams are placed in a bracket. Each Tie is winner-takes-all for advancement. Best when you need a clear champion quickly.

Round Robin

Every team plays every other team.

Standings are decided by Tie wins (then rubber / game difference as configured). No early elimination — ideal for smaller fields.

Groups + Playoff

Group stage, then knockout.

Teams play round-robin inside groups first. Top finishers advance to a knockout playoff. Matches League Planner’s “groups with playoff” idea.

Example rubber compositions

Same template for every Tie in the event

Thomas Cup style

3 singles + 2 doubles

  1. Singles 1 (MS)
  2. Singles 2 (MS)
  3. Doubles 1 (MD)
  4. Singles 3 (MS)
  5. Doubles 2 (MD)

Sudirman style

One of each mixed disciplines

  1. Men's Singles (MS)
  2. Women's Singles (WS)
  3. Men's Doubles (MD)
  4. Women's Doubles (WD)
  5. Mixed Doubles (XD)

Club night / small format

Example: 1 singles + 1 doubles — faster sessions for local leagues. Any ordered mix of MS / WS / MD / WD / XD is allowed; first team to win a majority of rubbers wins the Tie.
